Prince George’s County, Maryland… Prince George’s County Interim Police Chief Mark A. Magaw and Hyattsville City Police Chief Douglas K. Holland participated in the opening ceremonies for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run -“Flame of Hope” for Special Olympics on Wednesday morning at the
. Hyattsville Justice Center
Over 100 runners representing the Prince George's County Police Department, Hyattsville City Police Department, Laurel Police Department, and other local and federal agencies joined the athletes as they carried the “Flame of Hope” north on Route 1 through College Park to the American Legion. From there, the “Flame of Hope” will be passed to a Special Olympics athlete who will light the Olympic cauldron to officially open the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games at Towson University.
Today marked the 26th Anniversary of the Maryland Torch Run. A movement that began in 1986 continues to be a huge success by raising significant funds for the Special Olympics. “The Torch Run inspires and uplifts everyone that it touches and it’s wonderful that we get to be a part of it each year,” said Chief Mark Magaw.For more information, contact the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Press Information Office at (301) 772-4710.
