The Prince George’s County Police Department smoked the Prince George’s County Fire Department in the inaugural Public Safety “Grill Off” at the “Taste of the Blvd” event on Saturday. Both sets of chefs arrived early at the fittingly named "Restaurant Row" located at the Boulevard at the Capital Centre. As thick smoke rose from the grills, the anticipation from spectators created an atmosphere similar to a premier boxing match. The only thing missing when the event began was Michael Buffer and his patented announcement, “LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!”
Police Officer First Class Haris Johnson, Police Officer First Class Quin Douglas, Mr. Randy Simpson and Mr. Renny Simpson battled Firefighter chefs Don Purdy, Keith McKay, and Rodney Cole for grilling supremacy. The police department's team prepared barbeque baby back ribs, deep fried whiting and trout and their secret weapon: bacon explosions. The fire department’s team prepared baby back ribs and marinated chicken breasts. Members of the public were thrilled with what both teams had to offer and lined up to donate money so they could join the fun and help vote for the winner. All proceeds went to the Prince George’s County Police Explorers program, and HEROES, Inc., which assists the widows and children of police officers and firefighters who fall in the line of duty.
Members from the Police Explorers Program and police officers from across the county came and provided moral support to the police chefs.
We would like to thank the fire department for accepting our challenge and for helping to make the event such a success. We would also like to thank the guest judges, Top Chef contender Timothy Dean, jazz musician Marcus Young and his saxophonist Marcus Mitchell, and Boulevard at the Capital Center Advisory Council Chair Cassandra Burckhalter.
A special thanks to Marketing Manager Calista Black, and Assistant to the General Manager, Dana Hill, for putting on a great event and allowing us to “settle the beef” at the Boulevard at the Capital Centre.
We have accepted the fire department’s request for a rematch and look forward to defending our title next year!
