In the last few days, our department has investigated two cases of domestic-related homicide. In one case, a wife was charged with intentionally striking and killing her husband with an SUV. And just today, we announced the arrest of a man who killed his girlfriend’s baby. In 2013, the Prince George’s County Police Department formed a Domestic Violence Unit which is tasked with investigating cases of domestic violence and more importantly, providing assistance to those who are currently in a dangerous relationship. We created this video to let our community know more about our DVU, how it operates and how it can assist those who need help. Please share this video with your friends, family and social circle.

While talking to the driver, the driver informed the officer he had a Taser in the trunk. After additional questioning, the driver also admitted to having a gun in the car. He had prior assault convictions so he could not legally carry or possess any firearms. Police Officer Allen took the suspect into custody. District II Patrol Officer of the Month
Police Officer Taylen Washington

On July 24th, Police Officer Taylen Washington responded to Largo Center Drive for an armed robbery. The victim had been approached by four suspects, one with a handgun, who assaulted him and stole his wallet and backpack. After backup officers arrived, Police Officer Washington continued to search for the other suspects and was able to find and arrest a second suspect.

District III Patrol Officer of the Month
Police Officer Kyle Cook

On July 23rd, while on patrol in the area of Cedarleaf Avenue and G Street in Seat Pleasant, Police Officer Kyle Cook saw an occupied, parked SUV. As he went to conduct a field investigation, the driver drove off as a suspect bailed out of the passenger side and tried to run away. While running after him, Police Officer Cook saw that the suspect was holding something in his waistband. Moments later, the suspect fired a round from a handgun but didn’t strike the officer due to his officer safety tactics. The suspect was arrested a short distance away. A loaded handgun was found nearby. The suspect was already a convicted felon.

District IV Police Officer of the Month
Police Officer Jamal Neptune

On July 7th, while on patrol in the area of Wheeler Road and Southern Avenue, Police Officer Jamal Neptune spotted a car wanted in connection with a shooting the previous night. Police Officer Neptune attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the car sped off. The driver lost control a short time later and the car struck a curb. One occupant got out of the car and ran. District V Patrol Officer of the Month
Corporal Keith Gibson

On July 26th, Corporal Keith Gibson responded to Kilbourne Drive and Woodbourne Avenue for a loud music complaint.
When the first officer had arrived on the scene, a black SUV was seen traveling at a high rate of speed and hit a parked car. An officer approached the driver and could smell alcohol. As that officer was preparing to administer field sobriety tests to the driver, the driver assaulted the officer and fled in the SUV. A lookout was broadcast and a short time later, Corporal Gibson spotted the SUV and conducted a traffic stop. The driver jumped out and ran. Corporal Gibson ran after him and caught him.
Further investigation revealed the driver was in possession of a handgun. He was charged with assault and possession of a firearm.

Police Officer First Class Andrew Wallman

Police Officer First Class Thaddeus Carrington

Once on the scene, the patrol officers canvassed the area with no results and cleared the call. The patrol officers stayed in the area and within minutes, officers were dispatched again to the area of Avebury Drive for the report of suspects breaking into an apartment.  POFCs Wallman and Carrington were able to respond quickly and make a safe approach to the building without being discovered by the suspects. While tactically observing the males inside the apartment building’s laundry room, the officers saw a suspect discard a handgun. As the suspects left the building, the officers conducted a tactical approach and took them into custody without incident. The handgun was recovered.

WANTED: Young People’s Voice on Policing

It’s an important conversation. Each month, Chief Magaw, the Executive Command Staff and a group of young people meet at PGPD Headquarters in Palmer Park. These young people sit on the Chief’s Youth Advisory Council. They hear about our department and, in turn, we get their opinions on policing and current events. Chief Magaw created this council earlier this year with the goal of establishing an open dialogue with an age group that will bring a valued perspective on law enforcement issues. Several bright young citizens join us each month for this conversation, but we’re excited to now expand that group. The council is open to those between the ages of 16-24. Candidates would preferably live, work or attend school in Prince George’s County. Anyone interested in joining us on this important council is asked to write a paragraph about themselves and include why he or she would like to sit on the council. Please send that information to Police_CYAC@co.pg.md.us. We’d like to hear from interested applicants by mid-September.

PGPD Remembers Fallen Officer Adrian Morris

Let us pause to remember our fallen hero, Police Officer First Class Adrian A. Morris, lost this day in 2012.

Police Officer First Class Morris was born on April 11, 1989, in Kingston, Jamaica. He was raised in Laurel and became a U.S. citizen in 2009. He entered the police academy on January 19, 2010, after serving for five years as a Prince George’s County Police Explorer. He graduated on September 20, 2010, was briefly assigned to District I, and then transferred to Squad 29 in District VI.

On August 20, 2012, patrol officers were dispatched to a gas station at 6600 Sandy Spring Road in Laurel for an attempted theft from an automobile. Two suspects unsuccessfully tried to open the doors of a customer’s car before fleeing from the gas station. As officers were on the scene interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence, a gas station employee noticed the suspect vehicle returning to the gas station. The on-scene police officers were alerted, and POFC Morris returned to his police car and drove after the suspect vehicle. While following the suspect vehicle on I-95, he swerved to avoid striking a civilian vehicle. His patrol car left the roadway and struck a guardrail. POFC Morris suffered critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police Officer First Class Morris served the Prince George’s County Police Department for 2 1/2 years and was the 27th member of this agency to make the ultimate sacrifice. He was the 52nd law enforcement officer to give his life in service to this profession within Prince George’s County.

At the time of his death, Police Officer First Class Adrian A. Morris was 23 years old and survived by his mother and eight-year-old brother.
