Detectives Charge Suspect in Double Homicide in Capitol Heights

Zephren Jamal James

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit charged a suspect in connection with last Wednesday’s double homicide in Capitol Heights. He’s 32-year-old Zephren Jamal James of the 1200 block of Kings Valley Court in Bowie. Detectives are looking into the possibility a second suspect was also involved.

On September 30, 2015, at about 7:45 pm, patrol officers were called to the 6800 block of Central Avenue for the report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the two victims outside of an apartment building suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims are 37-year-old Ernest Lott of Clay Street in Northeast Washington and 43-year-old Garland Johnson of 5th Street in Northeast Washington.

The preliminary investigation reveals the fatal shootings occurred following an argument involving the suspect and victims. During that dispute, the suspect, James, was also shot in the hand. He walked into a hospital for treatment a short time later. Once he was released, he was taken into custody.

James is charged with two counts of first and second degree murder and a firearms charge. He’s in custody of the Department of Corrections on a no bond status.
