PGPD Arrests Suspect in Murder of Marquita Wimms

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested 29-year-old Joseph Poteat for the murder of Marquita Wimms. Detectives developed Poteat, of the  1900 block of Rochelle Avenue in District Heights, as a suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Poteat turned himself into detectives with our Criminal Investigation Division today, October 20, 2015, at 12:30 pm.
On October 3, 2015, at about 10:45 pm, patrol officers responded to the 1900 block of Rochelle Avenue in District Heights for the report of a vehicle that crashed into a building. When they arrived, they found Wimms inside the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Poteat is now at the Department of Corrections. He will likely be placed on a no-bond status.
