Detectives Charge Suspect in Connection With Fatal Shooting in Bladensburg

Detectives with our Homicide Unit charged a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenager in Bladensburg. The suspect is 17-year-old Erik Lopez of the 7100 block of Webster Street in Landover Hills. The suspect and the victim, 16-year-old Diego Gomez-Martinez, were friends.

On September 22nd, at about 8:00 pm, officers from the Bladensburg Police Department were called to the 4200 block of 58th Avenue for a shooting. When they arrived, they found Gomez-Martinez suffering from a gunshot wound. He died several hours later at a hospital.

The preliminary investigation reveals the suspect was handling a weapon which discharged and struck the victim. Following the shooting, the suspect fled. He was arrested Monday evening.

Lopez is charged with manslaughter and a weapons charge. He is charged as an adult. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a $200,000 bond.
